Blackjack Tournament

Blackjack tournaments work similar to any other card tournament in the casinos, such as poker. A group of people sign up for them, they are routed to different tables, and the winners of those tables go on to semi-final or final rounds, depending on how large the tournament is. These tournaments can be lots of fun to play, and you can meet new people as well.

Just keep in mind, however, that the tournament rules can vary greatly. Besides all the rules of regular blackjack, each casino has its own more specific rules. Sometimes you will find different tournaments at the same casino have different rules. So it pays to ask every time you enter, and to know if anything has changed since you last played a tournament there.

The tournament works much like a poker tournament, where people buy in to the game and are given chips to play. Remember that if you receive $5k in chips it doesn’t mean that it will cost you $5k to buy in. That’s just what you have to play with. You will also be told what the limits are, and those are usually either $5 or $10, depending on the casino and the winnings. There will also be a maximum on the total you can bet in any one hand.

When you sit down to play, you must not bring any devices or people who could help you. This includes items like pen and paper, cell phones, calculators, etc., and you may not have coaches. You will also have time limits, so make sure you know how to play the game well. Generally you will have 15 to 20 seconds to take any kind of action, although the last hand is much more important and you will often have more time to make decisions on that one (sometimes up to three minutes). Once a table has determined a winner, if it’s you then you will probably move to another table. This can feel like a whole different tournament, so don’t let it psyche you.

Remember, too, that many of these tournaments are frequented by professionals. Professional blackjack players can certainly have a bad day, and get lousy cards, but all in all you will want to avoid tournaments where they might appear unless you have been playing for some time and are ready to meet them at the tables. In the meantime, remember that there are lower level opportunities for lower level players, and you may want to stick with amateurs until your skills are well polished. It can take some time for this to happen, so be patient, watch your opponents, and study the game.

These tournaments can also be a great source of fun and social contact for you. You may end up choosing to stick with the lower level tournaments for that reason alone because people in the higher level tournaments are not in it for friendship. You alone can decide how seriously you want to take the game and tournament play.

Even if you choose the small tournaments with lower winnings and bet limits, you will still want to play your best. No one has a good time if they just keep losing, no matter how many friends you might make or how cheap the entertainment value is. Study the game before you play, read the rules of both the casino and the particular tournament, and sit down to win. That way you will do your best and might even make a little bit of money in the meantime.
