Baccarat Methods |
Baccarat is one of the most interesting card games in any casino. Its origins can be traced back to the 1400s in Italy. It is a popular game among “whales,” the biggest players in the casino.
There are three versions of the game, with punto banco (the North American version) the most popular.
In baccarat, suits of the cards are meaningless. Cards 2-9 are played at face value.
Kings, queens, jacks and 10s have a value of zero. Aces are worth 1 point.
The value of the hands eliminates anything over 10. For instance, a hand that totals 14 (6 and 8) actually totals 4.
The highest score possible is nine.
In North American baccarat, the casino is the banker at all times. So players have the option of betting on the player (not themselves – a designation) or the banker.
Cards are dealt face down, then revealed. If there is an 8 or 9, it is declared a “natural” and the hand is over.
Otherwise, the following occurs:
If either the Player or the Banker achieve a total of 8 or 9 on the initial deal (known as a 'natural'), no further cards are drawn. If neither player has an 8 or a 9, play proceeds as follows.
If the Player has 0-5, the Player draws a single card. If the Player has 6 or 7, he stands.
The Banker's play depends on if the Player drew a card, and on what card he drew.
--If the Player did not draw, the Banker draws if he has 0-5, and stands on 6-7.
--If the Player drew a 2 or 3, the Banker draws if he has 0-4, and stands on 5-7.
--If the Player drew a 4 or 5, the Banker draws if he has 0-5, and stands on 6-7.
--If the Player drew a 6 or 7, the Banker draws if he has 0-6, and stands on 7.
--If the Player drew an 8, the Banker draws if he has 0-2, and stands on 3-7.
--If the Player drew an ace, 9, 10, or face-card, the Banker draws if he has 0-3, and stands on 4-7.
The person betting can choose to bet on the player or the banker, or a tie, when both player and banker have the same hand.
The best method for baccarat is simply to bet the banker every time. Many players will carefully track every hand and who wins what, but the banker bet is most effective.
There is little strategy that can work effectively in baccarat. One hand has no bearing on another; past performance is no indication of what the next hand will be.
There are methodology books that attempt to exploit the number of card shuffles to help predict the outcome, but these are unreliable. Baccarat is essentially a game of chance. The simplest strategy is to be the banker every time, because the banker’s option to act comes second. In the end, however, this is a game of chance, and there are no patterns.
Some baccarat books say you should keep careful track of who wins what and find the pattern, but there is no true pattern.
In a casino, baccarat is often played in a roped off room with high limits. It is very popular among big players. It is not dissimilar from blackjack conceptually, which can make it appealing once a player understands the basic rules.
The simplest method is to bet the banker at all times, double bets when your bankroll doubles and cut them in half when it dwindles.
Baccarat can be a fun game if you use these methods.
